Clinics
Edging towards the end of our Summer Tuesday Clinics,
we are already prepping for the next batch in September. Everyone
has done an amazing job so far, especially considering the recent
heat they've been facing during their workouts. There are just two
weeks left, so we'll see you all out again on September 5th, and hopefully
some new faces.
As always, the Marathon/Half Marathon Clinics are
progressing well as the mileage goes up and up. It has been a very
dedicated group of runners this time around, with almost everyone
showing up for the extra workouts midweek. The strong contingent at
Rice Lake on Thursday evenings is a perfect example. Keep up the good
work!
Trail clinics are well under way, with the 10km
and 20km Iron Lung races just over three weeks away. Everyone has
made leaps and bounds in the two current clinics. It was especially
exciting to see so many members out at the Squamish Thunder race in
August. Check out Mountain
Madness for updates on the next clinics.
Races and Events
July has been packed with great races and results!
Starting off with the 50km Knee Knacker on July 8th,
we saw some fantastic achievements. Mark Bates defended his title
while Suzanne Evans crushed the women's course record. From the North
Shore Athletics family, we had a number of racers including Nicola
Gildersleeve, Heather Jackson, Lara Gilchrist, Kathleen Watson, and
many more. There were also a number of first time racers out in the
grueling heat. Check out the full results.
The next weekend was the Squamish Thunder 10 Miler.
The beautiful run around the Alice Lake area raised funds for the
Squamish Food Bank. Results
and photos.
This last weekend was the second race in the Run
the North Shore series, the Seymour Hill Run. Eight miles straight
up the road, and everyone's favourite run leader, Sammi, took the
top place in 1:07:52. Results are here
and photos will be posted shortly.
August is full of great events too, including my
favourite trail race/relay, STORMY. The race follows the famous Test
of Metal bike course in Squamish, through picturesque mountains, forests,
and trails. Although the 64km race may be a bit much for most, the
three person relay makes a great alternative. Check out www.stormytrailrace.ca
for details on the race and information on volunteering. Register
today before the prices go up on August 1st!
The 5th Annual Iron Lung will be taking place on
August 20th, the race that started it all. This year's installment
will feature distances of 10km and 20km. The Iron Lung races are the
3rd event in the Run the North Shore series and the 4th event in the
Iron Lung series. Starting at Parkgate Community Centre, the 10km
option provides a perfect introduction to trail racing while the 20km
race will challenge the toughest of trail runners. We also need a
number of volunteers for this race, so please email me at tom@ironlung.ca
if you are interested in helping out.
Club Fat Ass has a number of races throughout the
next couple of weeks. The first is the Fluffy Bunny Trail Race in
the Buntzen Lake area, followed by the exhillerating night run in
Capilano Canyon on August 19th. Get more info on their website.
Products
HammerGel is back! That's right, for all of you
who have missed it, we've finally got HammerGel back into stock through
another distributor. A fantastic and tasty gel, it quickly became
popular for the 26 serving container. Unfortunately, the gel was no
longer distributed in Canada for a period of time, but it is now back
in stock. Come fuel up!
On the topic of gels, come check out the variety
of options available. PowerBar has just reformulated their gels with
a better, faster absorbing carbohydrate blend and 200mg of added sodium.
The Gu and Carb-Boom gels also offer a great variety of flavours.
Or, if you're looking for a more natural option, check out the HoneyStingers.
Made from organic ingredients and primarily using honey as their energy
source, these tasty gels are a great alternative.

Plantar Fasciitis by Jen Keefer
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the thick
fibrous tissue that covers the bottom of the foot from the heel to
the base of the toes. Pain is most commonly located at the origin
of the plantar fascia on the inside of the heel bone (on the medial
tubercle of the calcaneus). Pain is usually worse during the first
few steps out of bed in the morning or after standing for a prolonged
period. The pain will get better as you get moving, but may come back
with running or prolonged walking in poor footwear... read
