This is one
of my favourite trails; a fun loop that can be as hard or easy as
you make it. For example, if you run with Eric, it's hard; if you
decide to go at a more reasonable pace without sprinting up every
hill possible, it can be easier. Varied terrain and constantly changing
scenery keeps it interesting while good drainage and lots of tree
cover (providing shelter from the sun or rain) makes it a good route
in any weather. The trails are fairly well marked and there are
options for MANY other trail options. Get confortable and establish
your bearings in the inner loop before you venture off the beaten
path.
Starting at
the Buntzen Creek Bridge at the east side of the main picnic area,
the trail heads north passing several lake access points and viewpoints.
After a short section along Powerhouse Road, the Buntzen Lake trail
resumes at the North Beach picnic area. From here cross the Suspension
Bridge to continue along the Buntzen Lake trail or return along
Powerhouse Road. The trail takes you up and down across a steep
and slippery section of open rock underneath the powerline, through
mature forest, across several bridges, then finally opens up onto
the Pumphouse Road. Follow this road south to the floating bridge
across the southwest arm of Buntzen Lake. Cross the bridge and follow
the trail back to the main picnic area.
